Updated Regulation May Mean More Jobs for Those With Disabilities

Updated Regulation May Mean More Jobs for Those With Disabilities and Veterans, Suggests Ryan Platt, a Chartered Special Needs Consultant

As Disability Awareness month comes to a close, and Memorial Day has now passed, the realization that unemployment is more than double the national average for the disabled and for veterans slaps us in the face. All people find value in working, and now an updated regulation may allow more than 400,000 individuals with a disability find that valuable job.

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) May 29, 2014 -- The U.S. Department of Labor adjusted regulations by implementing a section of the Rehabilitation Act, which now prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. This update not only prohibits discrimination but it goes a step further and provides hiring goals for employers when it comes to those with a disability. Employers will now have a goal of 7% of their workforce needs to be those with a disability or a veteran.

“This updated regulation provides individuals with a disability an opportunity to be open with their employers regarding their disability, and not be concerned that openness will mean not getting the job,” explains Ryan Platt, Founder of A Special Needs Plan and creator of “Individuals with disabilities have many skills that employers will find valuable. The individual disability will determine the type of position and the number of hours able to work, but this new regulation at least provides a level playing field.”
